Amstelveen, Netherlands, 30 October 2025 -Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI), through its European subsidiary Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW), is advancing Europe’s clean energy transition by delivering a new biomass-fuelled circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler plant for Mondi SCP in Ružomberok, Slovakia.
The project marks a significant milestone in Europe’s industrial decarbonisation and highlights SHI’s expanding role in developing renewable energy solutions that reduce emissions, strengthen local energy independence, and support long-term climate goals.
Boosting renewable energy generation in Central Europe
Part of Mondi SCP’s EcoPower initiative, the new biomass facility will replace an existing bark boiler and substantially increase renewable energy output at one of Central Europe’s most advanced pulp and paper mills.
Once completed, the project will:
-
Increase the mill’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90%
 -
Support a fossil-free district heating supply for the local community
 -
Improve regional air quality through reduced NOx and dust emissions

The initiative reflects SHI’s growing commitment to help European industries decarbonise through proven, high-efficiency energy technologies.
Strengthening Europe’s clean energy infrastructure
“We are pleased to continue our long-term collaboration with Mondi through this wide-scoped project, now focusing on sustainable energy generation and the decarbonization of industrial energy production,” said Juha Kalenius, Vice President, Energy Generation at SFW. “For SFW, this also marks a welcome return to the pulp and paper sector, where we have decades of experience in large-scale biomass applications.”
SFW’s contract scope includes full EPC delivery – from design, engineering, procurement, and supply to erection, commissioning, flue gas cleaning technology, and operator training services.
Construction is now underway following a full Notice to Proceed in May 2025. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2027.
European expertise in sustainable energy
SFW has supplied more than 550 CFB boiler units worldwide, including numerous installations serving Europe’s industrial energy market. Its biomass and waste-to-energy technologies are designed to deliver high efficiency, low emissions, and lower fuel and water consumption – aligning with SHI’s global purpose to enhance society through sustainable innovation.
Supporting Europe’s energy transition
Slovakia is among the European nations actively investing in renewable and biomass energy infrastructure. This project demonstrates how SHI Europe and its subsidiaries collaborate with industrial partners to deliver integrated, low-carbon energy assets that contribute directly to European energy independence and net zero targets.
