Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (SCM), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI), is set to introduce its range of advanced hydraulic excavators into the UK market from 2026.

The move marks a significant move for SCM, as it brings its next-generation excavators, renowned globally for their durability, precision control, and fuel efficiency, to Europe for the first time. It also represents a key step in the broader international growth strategy of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., one of Japan’s leading global providers of industrial machinery and engineering solutions.

SCM will establish a dedicated sales and service distributor network. The latest “Dash-7” range will be introduced, offering models from the compact SH80BS-7 to the large SH520LHD-7, all equipped with Stage V-compliant engines and SCM’s proprietary Sumitomo Intelligent Hydraulic System (SIHIS).

Up to 15 per cent lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions

This system delivers smoother hydraulic control, faster cycle times, and up to 15 per cent lower fuel consumption than the previous model, ensuring strong performance with reduced emissions. Built around robust frames and reinforced booms, the range has been engineered for reliability and longevity - from urban projects to heavy excavation and quarrying.

Kiichiro Sahara, General Manager of Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., said: “Our construction machines are designed with a simple philosophy - to deliver dependable performance, lower environmental impact, and long-term value for customers. Entering the UK is an exciting milestone for Sumitomo Construction Machinery. We look forward to working with experienced distributors who share our values of quality, service, and innovation.”

Operator comfort and safety are also central to the design, featuring large, low-noise cabs, improved visibility, and intuitive controls that meet European expectations for ergonomics and welfare.

Strengthens SHI's existing presence in the UK

The introduction of SCM machinery builds on the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group's established presence in Europe. Through its regional headquarters, Sumitomo Heavy Industries (Europe) B.V., based in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, SHI coordinates operations across its nine core businesses and around 65 sub-subsidiaries throughout the region.

These include leading companies in mechatronics, power transmission, energy systems, plastics machinery, cryogenics, and precision manufacturing. Together, SHI employs more than 4,500 people in Europe and more than 22,000 globally.

This latest expansion aligns with SHI’s purpose: to enhance society and those within it with compassion through our ownership and vision - combining Japanese engineering heritage with European innovation and sustainability goals.
